As far as I know there are some rules of greeting: the one who's approaching the other who stays on the place should greet him first. But if to peple approach each other - well, usu boy (man) greets the woman (girl), and between men the older one, or the one who wanna say it first, not really important..
I like to greet people first, to smile to them and start the conversation, if I know in advance that they will answer me with the same kindnes...

It is rude, in general, not to say hello. I used to work at a place where certain folks never said hello first, and after awhile, I began to see them as big passive-aggressive sourpusses. It gets kind of old after awhile and is bad for company culture and morale. Saying "Hello" is simply polite because you are recognizing another's presence, even if you and the other person often don't see eye-to-eye. Not to say hello is basically ignoring another. If you want to work in that kind of environment, then fine, but I certainly don't.

I guess it depends on who sees who first. I usually say hello without even thinking about it. If I don't see someone and they see me then I suppose they'd say hello first.
There are those people that walk around ignoring people and expecting people to speak to them first but I would dismiss them immediately. Saying hi doesn't hurt anyone.
Merry Christmas!!

I'm little introvert type. So, I normally do not say hello to someone if I'm not badly in need to talk with him/her. But if someone says hello first, I always greet him/her.

Greet first. You don't know if they're shy, tired, having a bad day or what. But a quick 'hello' will reassure them that at least someone's on their side.

In Islam we say assalamu alaekum and the reply is wa'alaekum assalam
who is the first gets reward of 20 good deeds
and the second gets 15
so always we try to be the first.

I have never thought about it, it just kind of happens naturally. I think I must be the one that says "hello" first, if not verbally at least with a big smile!

That's not important that you must be the first/somebody must be the first then you say hello. The etiquette is you must greet people first esp. that's parents/oldman
