You know, there are many types of Vodkas for you to consider.

I quite like Moskovaskaya, particularly if the bottle is made from before the break up of the Soviet Union. It was really a good vodka then and not something that you're going to find just lying around, for sure.

Polish Wiebrowa, buffalo grass flavored vodka, is quite nice. You might try it.

I am fond of hot pepper vodkas and flavored vodkas. Stolichnaya makes some types that are available in the US fairly regularly. You might try those.

Scandinavian vodkas, like Absolut and Findlandia are very clean vodkas I think. I still don't like them as much as Russian vodkas however.

In the end, it's most important that the water used in the distillation is very nice and that the potatoes are very starchy and somewhat sweet (starches and sugars are makes the alcohol after all). It should be distilled several times, to take away impurities.

Ultimately, it's you who has to decide what fits your palette. Vodka can be a very nice drink though to explore. It's a very versitile spirit.

Enjoy!

Smirnoff triple distilled is the best Vodka of any I have found sold in America and outside of Moscow. The one in the blue labeled bottle.

You may want to consider serving it warmer and not chilled or iced. Russians often serve it that way because their vodka has better taste and you loose taste the colder you chill the spirit or wine, beer, etc.

They serve it in a small glass and have 3-4 ounces almost always with food so they don't get drunk and enjoy it with foods or deli stuff like pickles, cornichons, and pickled dishes..

They almost never freeze and rarely chill or ice a good vodka.

A way of telling a spirit, or vodka or wine that has flaws is to drink it at room temperature, esp. white wine which everyone usually drinks chilled, and Vodka the same!

I think you now have some fun ideas for your quest, and my recommendation for Smirnoff Blue label tripple distilled.

I have a bottle of 'Bepeck' from Moscow it is the best I have ever tasted. Oh crap... I got the bottle to spell the name and tried to pour a capful to sip and it overflowed the cap and dribbled on my desk and the floor. What a waste of great Vodka. Fortunately it won't need to be cleaned up as it will evaporate clear and clean. It is so very tasty.

Let it be your guide for testing a vodka by drinking it straight at room temperature. You could even have fun with it by having everyone come to a party with a room temperature, no less than 68 or 70 degrees F, bottle of their favorite vodka in a brown paper bag for a blind tasting. That would be a way for you to get a lot of bottles together for tasting without having to buy them and probably everyone would leave you their bottle too!!!!!

A treat that could come of that is you find a fabulous vodka at a cheap price. If you didn't find a fabulous cheap vodka, you might find one almost as good at a fraction of the price. It happens in the marketplace and blind tastings infrequently and all is fun on a search or better 'quest' for the best Vodka in America!

Tito's!!! It's distilled in Texas (weird, right?) but trust me it is so smooth. Perfect for a martini. No bite at all. Bars sell it as a premium vodka, so it's more expensive than smirnoff or absolute, but so worth it!!!
