Firstly they're by no means Always sold ready shelled - it's just that they're hard to crack open properly at home - and did we all know that they're actually the seeds of a tree and come in a big ball which has to be opened to reveal them in their own shells!

Brazil Nuts have made this American NUTS !
They are hard as heck to remove the shell.
I'll think I got a nice piece, put it in my mouth and Ouch! I got part of a shell.
In this country, they are still available in a shell.
They do amongst the other nuts make for a nice visual holiday display.
I guess I could practice shelling these, as they are the only ones left at days end. NAW, not worth the effort.

There was also a bit in the press last year that you now cannot buy Brazil nuts in shell because of something that was sprayed onto them during the growing season which is banned in the E.U. The chemical used is connected to cancer causing agents.

they're sod both ways, with AND without shell,
the reason there is so much consumer demand for the ones without shell, is simply because they're so hard to get out of the shell...
however, people in England, sitting by the fire, struggling to open a brazil nut have nothing to complain about!
Where they grow, they are almost impossible to get them out of their pods once they have dropped from their tree, a falling pod is so hard, often it kills people or animals who are underneath, as it lands on their head (seriously!) and the trees are so hard to grow as the pods are so hard.
Animals can't get into the pods where Brazil Nuts lie, at least not modern evolutionary ones anyway....

They're not always, especially this time of year you can buy them in the shell. They're a hard nut to crack though, and there's a knack to doing it, which is probably why they're often sold ready shelled.

They were sold both ways. But the EU, in their wisdom, decided that because the shells could cause an allergic reaction for some people, they could only be sold shelled.

I was told ( I have not bothered to verify this as I do not eat them ) that they are now only to be sold outside of the shell as the dust inside the shell cavity is a carcinogen.
Best check that yourself though. check the source link I posted.
