I struggle with this as well. I always feel that whatever I say it's nasty and the guest will hate me forever if I say it. That is why I employ sneaky guerrilla tactics:
1. I incrementally turn down the TV to almost no volume (if it's on).
2. I slowly turn lights off around the house, making the house seem quiet and eery and bedtime-like.
3. I cut the booze and switch to something like fresh juice or water for everyone.
4. I stop creating new conversation topics. There will be moments of awkward silence but this will only aid your cause.
5. I respond with short, sometimes one word answers. Not rude, just short.
6. I yawn a lot, even if I don't feel like yawning really. Loud (hand in front of mouth though) yawns - as they may not be looking at you.
Do the above and they will get the picture... In case they feel you are being rude, when they leave say something like "Oh, OK then but are you sure you don't want one more juice?". They'll obviously say no thanks but at least you look like you're not kicking them out.
Good Luck!

ain't no way... gotta do what you gotta do.
If 'rude' plays into it (for any unknown reasons) then so be it.
They would only be reluctant if you have a history of flying off the handle and if it's a close relationship ending. In those cases be gentle.
If it's merely to get some sleep then there's a great German saying that translates as... I must to go to bed because our guest needs to go home. Point made.

Well, if you're going to say "get the hell out" that sounds pretty rude already. You might say that you have another engagement, or if it's in the evening that you're tired and want to get some sleep. Just use your own common sense. There's no need to be rude to anyone, even if they are rude to you.

If you tell them to get out and try to do it without hurting their feelings you wont ever get your point across and they will just stay forever. Be straight yet cordial with them and say "Ok, House is closing up for the day" or something like that. If they dont get the hint say "Im not trying to be an asshole here but I was serious, time to go now" If you worry about their feelings youll get walked all over.

Just act as if you're the one preventing them from leaving. For example, say something like "Oh my gosh. I didn't realize how late it was. Here I am chatting on and on. You must be exhausted. I'm so sorry, you must be wanting to leave now. Let me get your coats." Then get their coats, and start helping them put them on. They will take the hint.

There have been a lot of good suggestions.
If you want to see them again and don't want to hurt their feelings tell them you have to be up early in the morning for work/take the dog out etc and it was nice to see them.
If you don't care for them then just tell them to get the f*ck out.

My sister changed the locks twice, on her boyfriend and then son. It worked both times. A little drama may occur after they can't get in, but stand firm.

You could say you have to go to bed, or you have to make a personal phone call, something like that, and say, ". . .so I'm going to have to say good night, (see you later, etc)." Just repeat that you have to 'whatever,' every few moments, until they go. I bet it won't take long. By the way, it's kind of you to seek a polite way to get your point across.
Merry Christmas!

you didnt state why you wanted them out but its your house you can get rude or choose not to, and if your at the point of saying "get the hell out of my hosue" something went wrong and made you feel that way, but if you want to be nice ask them to leave if they dont then get rude

Casually look at your watch and say "My gosh, It's way past my bedtime. I have a full day tomorrow so if you don't mind I need to head off to bed" Unless they are totally dense they will leave.
