To a kid, the sticking point is not sharing, it's giving things away. To a kid, sharing is trading. Sharing is being generous, and you have to teach a kid that is the way. Or sharing in the sense of you each have a sandwich, and you each trade half, so you both get to know what the other's sandwich is like. That's a very cool kind of sharing.
But call things what they are for kids, as much as you can. It makes it easier to learn. Sometimes it's nice to be generous, because it feels good to be able to give things you like to your friends, and sometimes even to strangers if they need them. Don't emphasize giving money per se, but giving something you would be able to use yourself if you kept it. That's generosity, and for a kid, that's often a bigger deal for a favorite sweet than for coins.
It's especially cool when you have a whole lot of the same kind of treat, and all your friends are allowed to eat it, and you are all having the same experiences of taste and texture together because of your own generosity. That feels really good, and if you are a very good kid, once in awhile your Mama and/or Papa may let you do that.

I love the last guy's response!
Society forces us to share. If it wasn't for that, I think we would all selfish. It's a natural instinct to want to keep what we like.

Just like adults, when kids have something good they don't want to let it go. If they see someone with something they want, they get jealous.

It's a survival instinct. Horders prosper....at least until the rest of the tribe gets sick of them being selfish and beats them with sticks.

When they see something they want, they just take it. It doesn't matter if it belongs to someone else, they don't really care. When they see another child who has a toy they want they just take it.
