Part of their appearance comes from actually air-brushing their make-up. The make-up artists custom blend a liquid color and air brush the foundation (sometimes body specific foundation) onto their entire body to hide their flaws.
After the photos are taken if they don't feel like the model is flawless enough they will photo-shop the image, sometimes evening out the skin tone, removing wrinkles, blemishes etc.

Normally foundation is used as a make up base for the face and will also use concealers on the face or other parts of the body to cover up discolorations or other skin issues. Concealers comes in different shades so that it would suit different skin tones.

Along with airbrushing, the other possibility is theatrical makeup. This is much more opaque than normal makeup, and can be used to cover/conceal major skin blemishes.

well in mags and tv it is airbrushed... i once freaked to do a photo shoot cuz of my roots, and the photographer was like dont worry! we will just airbrush it out..:)
but anyways, for discolorations 1st use foundation, even it out..then use concealer, dot that on. and then powder to set everything.
