It's up to you to evaluate the situation. It's is you who knows what is the special opportunity. But I think that arranging an evening with a friend is more important because these arrangements are not that common to happen.

Whats more important? The friend or the special opportunity? Friends don't come around every day, so unless its a once of a life opportunity that even your friend would genuinely understand without you lying through your teeth to explain why you can't be with your friend, then I'd say, hands down, go with your friend. Opportunities are a dime a dozen. Friends are much more expensive, in fact, as the commercial says, priceless.

It depends on the new opportunity. If it was an opportunity to go to a rock concert, I would stay with my friend. If it was an opportunity for a grad school or job interview, my friend would understand my need to cancel.
