They have long necks because this is how they evolved.
if you want to know what are the advantages of having a long neck in the African savanna:
- the obvious answer is being able to reach the young soft leafs at the canopy of the trees, this reduces the competition over food with other animals and increases the probability of survival.
- It is not a very well known fact, but adult Giraffs are not often attacked by preditors. their necks are too far from the earth for the large cats to bite, and their long legs are a powerful defensive weapon.

So it fills a feeding niche. There's fierce food competition in Africa and all the other animals strip the lower branches of the vegetation, but nobody could reach the very tops of the trees. The giraffe evolved a very long neck so he is one of the few who can reach the top, and therefore he has a steady food supply.

It is a giraffe you are talking about. God made animals in unique ways. The long neck helps the giraffe to reach the tops of trees and branches to get food. The are beautiful, graceful animals.

I think the answer should be obvious, the giraffe has such long legs it needs a long neck so it can drink without laying down to do it. Forget eating in trees water is still on the ground.
