no, you need a lens for the camera to work.

On a normal point-and-shoot camera (as they call it), there is a built-in lens... I'm sure you know what the lense is... the part that extends out, with the optics in the front.

on a digital SLR, if you look at the picture of "body only", that whole "chunk" in the front is the lens. Without it, the body is only just the base-section.

Think of it like this: the "body" is what holds the "brain" of the camera... the image-processor, battery, memory card, settings.

On a point-and shoot, the lens has certain properties like zoom (i.e. 3x, 4x, etc.) as well as other higher-settings like aperture. On a digital SLR like the D50 (dSLR), you have to buy lenses that do what you want. For example, if you want a lens to take wide-shots (landscapes or group photos), your lens needs to be something like a 18mm-55mm lens. If you need to zoom in a lot (i.e. like at a sporting match), you want a lens with 200mm-300mm.

In addition to the focal length (i.e. the measurement in "mm" which is "how much zoom"), you also pay more for lenses that are faster (there's a "f-stop number" like f/3.5 f/2.8 etc). I would recommend reading up on a book or asking another question if you don't know what f-stops are.

But suffice it to say, when I bought my dSLR, the body itself was $500-600. Lenses run you anywhere from $100-$200 EACH.... or some lenses are $1500+

digital SLRs are expensive things when you consider the whole package

NO, you need the lens. The camera is worthless without a lens. Typically kit lenses are lacking in quality. One is oft times better off buying the body only and buying a better lens separately. It also helps people with a ton of lenses from an older camera and who don't need the kit lens. They can save money, buy the body only, and use their old lenses.

The D50 is being replaced by the D40. Bestbuy carries the D40 for around $599 with the lens.

You can get the D50 (body only) on Amazon.com for $424. If you can find it, Nikon has a 18-200mm lens. Tough to find but it's a great wide angle to telephoto lens.

Yes, it works. All the functions of the camera will work but you will get a blurred image. What the ad says is to make sure you understand what you will get from paying that price $449.99. Lens sold separately means because you can pick from different lenses with different price tags, thus they cannot put a single price for the lens to represent all lenses. For example, if you pick the standard zoom lens, you will be paying $449.99 + $179.99

^_^ enjoy your photo session

it cannot focus without the lens, they say lens sold seperatly because many types are available, and you will need to choose which kind(s) you want.

You don't need a lens if you want to get into pinhole photograpy. I wouldn't go that route, but you asked...

You need a lense - it wouldn't take pictures anyway and dust and other objects would get all over the cmos sensor causing dots all over your pictures
