The only difference I see between religion and spirituality is that one is organized and hierarchical (religion), and the other is personal (spirituality). Religion is what happens when people have the same spiritual ideas and come together to form an organization to bind themselves together based on those beliefs. Problems start when people are born into the organization and are pressured into believing. Everyone should be free to form their own spiritual beliefs, irrespective of their parents or society's beliefs.

apollo: Spirituality is about relationship; whereas, religion is about culture - a way of life based on "do's and don'ts" . One is based on unconditional love and the other on futile, human attempts to earn that love. One [ love ] is given the other, it is trying to be taken by being "good" ... a HUGH difference. A religion can be drug addiction, money worship, sex, alcohol addiction etc. etc. Old Testament Israel was religious ... attempting to worship God by doing this ... not doing that. They all failed and went into slavery at the hands of their captives. In the NEW Testament is a spiritual Covenant based solely, on WHO YOU ARE [worshipping God in both, spirit and truth] not whether you perform a bunch of good deeds or not. This is very important to not confuse religion and spirituality .

People choose them to be the same or separate things.
Some people are spiritual but not religious, which mean they DO believe in a creator or a higher being but do not necessarily follow any particular religious beliefs ( like Christianity, Islam, Buddhism etc)
The religious kind of people usually follow one of the major beliefs and might practice it and be spiritual with it at the same time.
Confusing. ain't it!??

There is a pure relgion that is synonomous with spirituality, but as in all things there is a counterfeit that is not the same as true spirituality but is superstition. The KJV talks about both.
James 1:27-2:1
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Acts 17:22-24
22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Christ took on the religious kooks that lived up away from 'the sinners' and thought they were Above it all, and therefor shouldn't walk among the others. They were the high priests that 'represented' God.
Christ just flat out told them "you hypocrites!, you know nothing of my father!"
Religion is Why Christ came here (to warn us that it's not the path to salvation) and spirituality is what he left behind. The Holy Ghost. Thus saving mankind from eternal damn nation.

I think they are different things.
There are spiritual people within religious groups.
There are spiritual people that don't belong to or condone religious practices.
The spirit belongs to the person.
Religion is a concept.

I do not think they are the same.
When someone is religious, he or she practises their faith and worship procedures strictly.
When someone is deemed spiritual, he or she thinks about their purpose of coming to Earth almost everyday.
I would say that i am spiritual.
