Sincere feelings, Full confidence in each other, A complete understanding of the feasibility of the said relationship, most important a selfless attitude wherein one should try to 'give more' to the partner than 'expecting more' from the partner. There should be that positive attitude from both the ends. It should not be that 'today I know that I love this person'.tommorrow suddenly I start feeling 'I love other person'. Anyway things will depend mainly on how clean the feelings are, how concerned both are, and also how serious are each other. Any relationship will work out really only when it is not based on the 'Need of the hour'. There should not be a 'Use and throw' attitude from both the partners.

A Connection is the single most important thing.
Communication is vital to help maintain the connection (clearing out bad blood, ensuring the spread of good vibrations, etc.).
Adaptability is necessary to survive those hurdles that life will throw at you.
Friends and people outside of the relationship can help you both stay healthy and sane as individuals, which helps both of you overcome troubles within the relationship itself (nothing sucks worse than having one or both of you dependent mostly on how your partner feels).
Good Sexual Chemistry helps. (Good sex can gloss over a lot of problems)
Interest. You have to keep the relationship interesting, whether through passionate romance, doing new things, being dynamic as people, or whatever, you have to keep things popping and changing, to keep both of you interested in it. You can't let it become hum-drum and boring.
I'm sure there's more, but I'll be chiggered if I can think of them.

A relationship is based, mainly on, mutual understanding which needs to be complimented with love, affection & care. Communication is one of the major foundations on which any relationship is built..lack of which or misuse of which destroys the relationship. The other ingredients of a successfull relation are... comittment, honesty, faith and compromise/ adjustment.
