The reason a man would pay for the first date is because he is asking her out. Now, If a woman asked you out...then it would be different. That is basically the rule for both men and women.
I have paid on dates before. But If a man asked me out to dinner...and then expected me to pay or go "dutch" I think that would be rude. After a few dates, Most women will help pay.
Traditionally The man always paid because they were the ones that held all the money(women for the most part didn't work). Times have changed obviously...so women have changed as well. Not all women have the same expectations. But if its something you are really worried or irritated about...perhaps you aren't ready to date yet.

I think this tradition goes back a long time but I don't see anything wrong with it. The thing is ou can't expect it to be like this for very long, after the first couple of dates each person should take turns or just half it. There is nothing wrong with spliting the bill, but it looks better if one person or the other just does it with out discussing it. So if you've been (the Guy) buying dinners for a while it should be a given that she should stop him from buying it and she should.

I guess a lot of girls expect it because it's the nice thing to do. plus it's been going on for a long time so now girls just expect it. personally, i'm not letting any guy pay for things. i hate it when people pay for like a movie to go see or something, i always have to give the money back to them in the end or else i feel bad.

I'm a girl and I don't expect the boy to pay for me on the first date, second date, never actually. If my date wants to pay thats cool, go for it, but I don't think its manditory. But anyways I heard that boys like to pay for girls.

Yeah I agree with 'becstar' it's a tradition and it's a girl thing also. But then there are those girls that want their b/f to pay for them for everything and then there are those that they want alternating payments. But in my opinion when a guy is with a girl, I think the guy has to pay for his g/f. The girls love to be treated as princess and when paying for them, they feel important. That's what I think mate.

This must have been some kind of unwriten rule where guys are made to pay. Nowadays, they go dutch, where the couple split the bill.
Some gals just take advantage, and pressure the guys to pay. But then again, there are guys who wants to impress and brings the gals to expensive places. Time have change.
Good Luck

Well, if he asks her out he should pay, but if she asks him out she should pay. After that if they continue to date the guy usually pays because he is showing her he can take care of her. I agree that in this day and age women dont need a guy to take care of them, so I have no problem picking up the tab on occasion. Especially on his birthday.

the first date is like YOU invited HER, so that's just customary. for the rest, guys are always expected to pay for the girl because it's being a 'true gentleman' and a girl likes to be spoiled by her guy. no girl wants a guy that can't spoil her and afford her.

It is customary...
The custom started long ago when women
had very little money of their own and little
means to make any..
It is also tied to the custom of mans being able
to care for the woman..
You also won't get a second date if you don't pay for the first one.
