I got an old mahogany table with the top in light/golden colours with a stunning pattern on it, it almost looks like flames. However there are some scratches on it and I was thinking of using sandpaper to remove these and then re-paint it. But I'm uncertain how the flame effect was made and can I get the same effect and how?

The scratches are deep so I will need to remove some of the wood to get an even surface. However I was thinking more in the line of how to re-create the almost three dimentional effect in the wood?

If you value this piece of furniture you would probably be better off calling a proffesional restorer to handle the job. if you screw it up you have no compensation. I know that it is probably not the answer you wanted but it sounds like a lovely table and it would be a shame to see it destroyed.

Scratches on Mahogany can somtimes be removed, by cutting a "fresh" Brazil Nut in half and rubbing the cut side of it in small circles over the affected area. The oil from the nut must be allowed to get right into the wood and it takes a long time, but the result is often dramatic. The same method works on cup marks etc.

I'd try stripping the table first, then lightly sanding it. Sanding should only remove a minute amount of the wood, so even if the table is an inlay, there will be enough wood left to keep the pattern. If you just sand the scratches, the finish around the scratched area will also get scratched while sanding and make it look dull.

Do not use sandpaper.
You need to fill the scratches in and pollish them out.
Bit like the old yellow pages add "french pollishers, you might just save my life"
If its not something you have experience with get some quotes from different companies.
Are they very deep?
Its very difficult to try an match old with new when it comes to decorative gold inlay time is the key factor the older the design the more difficult to recreate.

Nitromors will remove the whole design, definately do not use.

Sandpaper isn't the answer, don't use sandpaper.

Get a large tin of "NITROMORS" from your local hardware store. tightly close all your doors and windows and then apply a thick ( approx) half inch) layer of nitromors to the top of the table.

After approximately two hours you will notice a marvellous difference to your table. It will be better than new!

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/QKZXI
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

STOP!
