It's not that we try to. It's just how men are made. Do you see me asking "Why does it seem like all women do is tell the truth?" No. I don't have a problem with you, so you shouldn't have a problem with me.
P.S. This answer is a lie.

Its not just "guys" who lie. Some women do also. My wife, when I met her, used to lie to her mother all the time. Alot of the time there was absolutely no reason for her to lie. Sooooooo, after seeing this a few times, I asked her why she did this. She said she didn't know, she always had. I told her straight up, "I don't like to play games and I definitely don't like lying. If this was how she was going to be, then I didn't want to know her" This took her quite by surprise I could tell, but it also made her stop and think. Sooooooo, as I stated, my wife used to do this......We have been together for 18 years now and I've never caught her in a lie since I questioned her on why she did it. Soooooooo, if you care about the person you're asking about. Do exactly what I did, and ask him why he does that and tell him you will not play these games.....That should put a stop to it....Or make you see its time to move on....

Because they're afraid of your reaction? Probably they've gotten in trouble before over something they thought was minor and it really wasn't to someone else.
At the end of the day guys just want everything to be peaceful and the easiest way for them to have their peace, is to lie about whatever thing, they think MIGHT set their wife or girlfriend off.

If you're involved with a guy that lies, forget him. He won't change. You are young and you will find a guy that was raised right and doesn't lie. Guys lie mostly because they don't know how to handle situations and just dont' want to get in trouble. Let your guy have his fun but just make sure he stays true to you.

For real, often they do it to show toughness or, in other words, to passive aggressively communicate "hey, if you think I'm inferior to (name a movie star, other crush) or want to try and make me treat you better than I treat myself I should lie sometimes just to say I can also get the best of you sometimes". Socially try to run something by them thinking "it's a girl thing guys are too dumb to get it" and, if they do get, chances are they will rebel by doing the same you did to them in that process: something bad that's not said to them directly.
Want to stop that annoying passive-aggressiveness?
Be fun and treat them like men not "nice guys", and they are less likely to need to "prove themselves" by lying or doing naughty things and hiding them from you and, when caught, thinking "well hey now we're even it's better than being your inferior".
Guys, as a defense mechanism, often feel a need to be either equal or dominant, with the fear of being disrespected by each other and women if they fail to. And sadly, some guys feel they have to cheat, always have things their way...or else the girl will think they are weak and leave: and sadly many girls do leave and even cheat on them or split them from their friend when they don't put up that kind of pressure. Think about it, when girls call a guy a "loser", it's basically like saying he has no balls or self-respect, that he never gets into the picture and never fights back. And a guy, often no matter how much pissing people off he has to do to prove his strength, will do virtually anything to avoid that status.
And you can convince the guy(s) in question you don't need to have them play that game to get you to respect their strength, but, to make up for all the women who DO play such games, sadly, it takes time (and sometimes a lot of walking out on guys when they do lie along with not giving them incomplete truths) to gain trust and peace from them...that you and them can be equals without their losing your respect.

You're paranoid...
I don't lie that often and frankly I don't appreciate the stereotype.
Let me hit the guys in this thread with some truth: All the women in this thread that say "Guys lie, it's easy for them" or "They're all dirty lying pigs" are the worst kind of women. They judge guys on appearance or wealth and could care less about their intelligence or loyalty until they're months into a relationship with them. Any woman here who understands that there are good men are the good women. They're more intelligent than the other women and would make 10 times the wife. If you want a relationship that doesn't end in a divorce, look for those women. As for the women mentioned earlier... avoid them like the plague.

They lack the self confidence to own-up to their responsibilities. For some strange reason, lying comes natural to men.
They dont have in-depth thinking enough to realize that the truth will quickly take the situation to a new level (resolution) and a lie will SLOWLY take it to ALL different levels (trust, respect, feelings. the list goes on). Basically, its takes a responsible person to be honest, and some men dont possess that quality. (I love men, but its the truth)
