First of all, you don't need one. Second, it's called a potato or a two-liter bottle. Third, you don't need one!

First of all, it's illegal to make your own silencer (suppressor) without being licensed or filing the proper Form 1 with ATF. This includes potatoes, 2 liter pop bottles and lawn mower mufflers.

Second, silencer is a term many people use for a suppressor. Technically there is no such thing as a silencer because there is no way to make the gun completely silent. It is called a suppressor because it suppresses the sound level of the gun being fired. Some do it more effectively than others.

When a gun is fired there are many things that produce sound - the rapidly expanding gases behind the bullet, the sound of the bullet breaking the sound barrier (if it's supersonic), and the sound of the action. A suppressor and only help to eliminate the sound from the expanding gases by slowing them down. It's like letting the air out of a balloon slowly instead of popping it.

There are plenty of legal uses for suppressors ranging from pest control to recreational shooting.

For a rifle, most high velocity ammo is supersonic and most standard velocity ammo is subsonic. Barrel length has a lot to do with it. Out of a pistol, almost all .22 ammo is subsonic.

The previous answer that "suppressors" are legal but can't be put on the gun and "silencers" are illegal for civilians is not correct. Silencers are legal in about 35 states in the US. For more info on this, consult Bardwell's FAQ on the subject - www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/usr/wbardwel/public/nfalist/nfa_faq.txt

I own two legal, registered suppressors. One is built into a Ruger Mk II pistol, the other is a screw-on type I use on an AR-15 rifle with a .22 kit. Here is a video demonstrating the difference between subsonic and supersonic ammo. www.bloomautomatic.com/tac65.wmv

Answer #1: A suppressor and a silencer are two completely different things. A supressor is legal to OWN but cannot be kept within a certain distance of the firearm and is not legal for use unless you have a class 3. When used with subsonic ammo a supressor still doesnt effectively "silence" a gun, there will still be a large amount of noise from the gas release.

A silencer is ONLY legal for military and police usage. If you are caught with one it is a felony. It operates different then a suppressor due to the internal components. It causes the gas to efficently be released within the silencer reducing the audible noise to only the sound of the bolt when used with subsonic ammo. Supersonic ammo will have some noise but not much over the "pop" of the bullet breaking the sound barrier (much quieter then most think).

Answer #2: Find a lawn mower muffler from an old lawn mower and take a look at it. The answer is not far off if you have a little bit of time and a lathe (hand or auto) on hand. You'll just have to find a way to thread the barrel effectively. Keep in mind its still a felony.

Unless you use sub sonic ammo, a "silencer" isn't effective in suppressing noise. It may cut some of the initial discharge sound down, but the bullet breaking the sound barrier will create just as much noise as an unsupressed rifle will. And yes, 22 caliber LR does break the sound barrier, but they sell sub sonic ammo , usually for precision target shooting, but it can also be used in conjunction with a suppressor.

To answer your question, you can search online for silencers and there are companies that make them and sell them, which are also online. However, I have heard that although silencers are not completely illegal nationwide, they are illegal in some states/jurisdictions. Furthermore, I have also heard that if a cop ever finds you with a silencer they will almost assume that you are doing something illegal since there are really no legal reasons to have one. They will then try to investigate you a little further to figure out what you are doing. It is probably not worth your time/effort.

You might be able to find one on the Anarchist's Cookbook site. I've actually seen a silencer on a 10/22, and it was as long as the regular barrel. It was on my cousin's rifle, and he said that all you can hear when you shoot it is the shell being ejected. He uses it to hunt frogs.

Supressors are Class 3. If you make one without the BATF transfer tax your looking at a severe felony.

You don't.
You can get a suppressor, but not a
silencer.
