I sent mine 4 months out, but I would check theknot.com for a timeline.

ohh - look at this

A save the date notice is an item stating the date of a wedding or other formal event. It typically states the date when a couple plans to marry, so that recipients will know to keep that date free. Save the dates usually take the form of a card, but can also be a refrigerator magnet or similar item. They are sent out at least six months before the wedding date, and are usually followed by a formal wedding invitation.

There's is no hard and fast rule. If you already have a definite date set, then send them out as soon as possible, especially if you think that you will be late in sending out formal wedding invitations. Most people send out invitations as early as 6 months to 1 year in advance (especially if it's an out of town wedding or location wedding). If you think that there won't be much time in between sending out the real invitations and the actual wedding, then send out the save the date cards as soon as possible. Also, if the wedding is planned during peak wedding season, or if it might conflict with someone else's wedding, it's best to send them straight away.

We are doing ours a bit differently.

Since our guests live 8+ hours drive away from where we wish to have the wedding/reception, we are sending out invitations VERY early to give them a chance to respond and save up for the wedding and any hotel reservations they would need.

After they return the invitation "yes", then we send out the save the date magnets along with accommodation information.

I sent mine out in August for a March 07 wedding. I am getting ready to send my invitations at the end of the month beginning of January.

It depends on how many guests you have that need to come from out of town. If there are alot, then up to 8 months, If a little, 6 months. People need to plan for their trips.

We just got one for a wedding that's in July. It's up to you, but if you want people to attend, give them ample warning. I would suggest somewhere around 6 mos. ahead of time, so they can start planning for it. Good luck and Congrats!!!

6 months-1 year. It's really up to you and how far people will be travelling.

I was going to say about 6 months before the date, so there is no excuse for people saying "ooooooo We didn't know!!!!!"
