The reason you wash before using any sheets or clothing is that toxins are used in the finishing of the final product. It is just not good for you and can cause a myriad of problems such as dermatitis, breathing problems, headache etc. There is also debris from the manufacturing process. The difference between cotton and cotton sateen is the way the fibers are 'finished'. Sateen is a 'smoother' fiber. Both are cotton...it is not the 'content' that is different. Algodon means cotton.

Sateen sheets are usually cotton or cotton blend. The term "sateen" comes from the amount of warp threads on the top surface, which gives it a smooth luster.

Silk sheets are made from threads from a silk worm.

I would keep thread count in mind. The best sheets are high thread count, brushed microfiber sheets.

Sateen sheets are cotton. It's just a type of weave. Sateen is not the same as satin. They are soft, but tend to be wrinkley. But they are all I see anymore.

Silk sheets are, well, silk. They often have special care requirements.
