Be prepared to fight a potentially long battle. Adult lice and immature lice are pretty easy to get rid of, but their eggs are much harder to get rid of, and it is with these that the most problems crop up. People can think that they are rid of lice, but then get another case of lice from just a couple of eggs. Constant vigilance will be necessary to win this battle.
Get a good nit comb and thick conditioner and find a room with lots of light. Good nit combs are metal and typically cost ~$12 or more (e.g. LiceMeister or Nit Free Terminator comb). Without a good nit comb you will not be able to remove the eggs. Sit the subject down on a firm chair and cover the neck and upper body with a towel to prevent too much mess.
Look for the living adult lice, which have pinchers in front, and scuttle around. The small, white "crawly" things are the little immature lice and the white/brown microscopic things attached to the hair shaft are the eggs.
Disperse thick conditioner thoroughly through the hair of the affected person. Doing so will make the hair silky and much easier to comb through with fine tooth combs, and will also loosen the eggs so that they slide right off the strands.
Separate and clip the hair up into four sections and start combing, stopping to wipe the lice and eggs on a towel every few strokes. Continue until all the sections are done.
Repeat, wash the combs, and start again. You should comb through the hair until not a single egg or nit shows up! This will probably take an hour or so.
Pour a cup of white vinegar into a pitcher of water. Vinegar is also supposed to help loosen the eggs. Wash the hair out with the vinegar rinse and then with water.
Clean all of the infected person's contaminated belongings: clothes, towels, and bedding will need to be washed in hot water, and their mattress and room vacuumed thoroughly. Use the hottest setting on the dryer and dry for the longest time you can without harming the fabric.
Wait a day, and then repeat the process, sitting down, putting in the conditioner and combing through the hair. You could be be surprised after the last comb-through that the little parasites are back; although if they are, they should be back in greatly decreased numbers.
Again, comb through the hair until not one of the lice shows up. Repeat again. And again. And yet again. Usually two weeks will pass until all the lice are gone.

Tell your mom. This is too big of a job for you alone. She won't be mad at you. You will have to help her clean the house to rid the bedding and carpets of the nasty little critters. The best thing I found when my children were in school and brought home lice was cheap MAYO. It is non toxic and actually good for your hair. Work a large amount into your hair making sure you coat it all. Cover your hair with a plastic bag and leave in for 2-4 hours. Wash out and use the vinegar rinse described in an earlier answer. I was told by our pediatrician that is suffocates the adult lice and the conditioning of the mayo and the rinse help loosen the nits. Buy a cat flea comb from the store and comb EVERY strand of your hair to clean out dead lice and nits. Then launder everything, bag up stuffed animals and keep them isolated for at least a month, don't forget to vacuum the car too. Good Luck

Lice is only attracted to clean hair and I'm glad someone finally understood that. Your better off telling your mother. There are sprays you can purchase from a rite aid to spray around the house, beds, pillows, etc to prevent spreading. You can also ask a pharmacist about the best over the counter shampoo for head lice, you don't need prescriptions for those.

First thing I'd ever do would tell my mother. My sister on the other hand was in the same situation as you. She was an adult, and had lice. She decided to aviod my family for 3 months because she was embarressed. She tried to get her friends to clean her hair out. But, 3 months later we found her and she confessed. I grabbed some clippers and shaved her head she let it get so bad we had no choice. So it's best to tell your mother. My Grandmother is a foster parent and often gets children that come with lice so it takes 3 of us and often times many bottles of poison, and a special comb to zap and kill the bugs.

Like you said, lice are attracted to clean hair, so don't for one minute think it's because your nasty! yea, this may sound gross, but mayonnaise will get rid of lice....so i would suggest going to your local grocery store and buying some mayo. No one will ever have to know=) Simply just massage the mayo all throughout your hair and leave it in for about thirty minutes, rinse it out and wash your hair with some x-tra good smelling shampoo! GOOD LUCK!!!!

You can get over the counter stuff like Rit or the generic brand. The brand that works best is called Lice-Rx. You have to order it online but it kills it all and they don't come back. Go ahead and tell your mom. Bet she won't freak out like you think.
