She is a year and a half old and housetrained. Has not happened before. She just started doing it about a week ago at night. She gets taken out several times a day and always before we go to bed(so shes had a normal routine for over a year that we have not changed). She goes in the same spot in the kitchen every night for the last 5 or 6 days. Usually dont find it til the next morning so its hard to dicipline her for something she did hours earlier. Any suggestions as to why she might have started doing this and how to get her to stop?

Has anything changed in your environment? Has a new dog moved into the neighborhood? Have you changed the dog's diet? Sometimes changes in the dog's life and routine can trigger changes in their bowel habits.

My suggestion would be to crate the dog at night. That should solve the problem unless she is sick. Then she won't be able to hold it through the night. If that is the case then a trip to the vet is in order.

something might have change in the past 5 or 6 days...mabye change in feeding routine...if it's so..don't feed her too late at night...try to feed her a few hours before you take her out to do her business...
actually you can still dicipline her for things she do after..the pooh leaves a scent and she will recognize that it's her...get her to the spot and let her smell it..then scold her or a slight and gentle spank on the butt....i used to do that to my dogs...and it work..wheter it's poo...or digging a hole...i have 2 and i ussually am not sure which one did it..but i do that the both of them....it works...very well~
good luck..
p/s don't scare her..so better start with scolding

She might have a tummy thing going on. I had a dog that started going in the house after years of no problems, it turned out it was the beginning of a serious illness.
If you can't trace it to anything else and it continues I'd visit the vet.

She might not be able to hold it in.

Well first I would try getting her a doggy door and see if she can get in and out a little faster

But if you already have one or if that doesn't work I would take her to a vet.

put dog in crate at night for a few days.Spend more time with it as it may be bored.Rubbing a dogs noise in it's poop doesn't do anything but confuse the dog.Your right not to disibline it if you don't catch the dog doing it.

My dog *knows* it did something wrong. When I walk in he's sitting somewhere looking like "what? I didn't do anything?" with his head hung low. He gets the sniff, swat and shove outside.

of course I'm sure you know this, but if you put her nose in it..that would train her...BUT..the question is,why did she start. Before i would start disciplining her...i would call a vet tomorrow.
