Researchers have found a way to link just about everything to heavy computer use from depression, to obesity, to childhood obesity, to diabetes, to loneliness, to violent behavior. Even poor grammar, body aches, muscle pains, joint problems, cognitive development problems, and social development problems are being blamed on using computers.

Researchers are quick to link just about everything to something. Examples: they say microwave radiation causes cancer, they say cell phone use causes cancer, they say music encourages young people to have sex, they say video games encourages violence in young people, and they say eating hot dogs causes cancer. You are to remember that they will have something to say about just about every activity you will ever encounter in your life.

Too much of most things is a bad thing. When you spend the entire day on a computer, even if you are connecting with other people, you are withdrawing from human contact. Face to face, human contact. Even with a web cam, you are missing one key element of face to face contact, human touch. Human touch is what love and so many other feelings and emotions stem from. Without it, you can easily become depressed, lonely, feel like an outsider, and so many other things.

It's not good to spend your entire day on the computer. But, you need to look at why you are doing it. If you are bored, find yourself a hobby. If you are avoiding someone or something out in the real world, face it head on. If you are looking for company, join a club, group, or gym and make some friends. When you determine the real reason you spend all day on the computer, and you face that reason head on, the depression fades, and you once again are able to "live in reality".

If it's work related , then you work too hard. If it's not then it may be too much of an escape. Like drug /alcohol/gambling addictions this is a new area where many people have become adddcited to internet. Limit yourself to a certian amount of time a day and try to stick to it. Meanwhile go out and socialize or do some volunteer work that will get you out and about. Being on a computer aslo ahs health ahzards ...blood circulation loss m may cause blood clots, like people who fly long distances and have to sit for long periods of time. You need to get up and walk around a bit every hour. good luck.

It doesn't cause depression, but leaves you more susceptible to depression. the main reason for this is a lack of human contact, even if you are chatting constantly, as the mind needs living people and interaction with the environment. Trivia: babies used to just lose the will to live and die in hospitals, because previous nursing ethics did not allow for the babies to be picked up and coddled.

Hello,
In my opinion, I don't think it can cause depression...but if you already have depression, it can deepen it at times. I have depression and my PC is my fix... my only contact with the outside world, as I am home bound due to other illnesses. I will often neglect house duties to stay online. It's not a good thing to get into, if you make it the only facet in your life. I hope you will leave your PC to live out your life. You need more in your life.
I hope this helped! :)
Good Luck!

Last I heard, that would be a "Yes." There is radiation coming off the monitor that would be at least partially responsible for depression. If you work long hours at the computer, one solution would be to use one of the glass filters over your monitor.
You also want to take frequent breaks. Get up... walk around.

yes it can but it depends on the person. if the person has issues in their life that they should be working on, they may use the computer too much because it is safer than human contact. they may use the computer too much as it can be used as an escape. it also has a physical impact on a persons life, eg. lack of exercise, poor eating habits etc. you can also get addicted to certain things the computer has to offer, such as porno. if you are addicted to porno, but you want a relationship with someone, then you are not learning how to interact, and gain self confidence with others, if you are addicted to porno. if porno is your only sexual relief, after a while it can leave you with an empty feeling, of being dissatisfied, which in result can leave you depressed, because you are only getting short term relief

No, not unless you are thinking about something else besides your work.
If you are on the computer all day at home, then you get away from it some. It could cause depression if that is all you do in your spare time.

It can. If that means you are not getting exercise, proper socializing, diet, working towards goals, etc... then yes, definitely.
If you can, talk to a therapist, if only once or twice to let them weigh in on your situation.
There are also LOTS of books about this which are very helpful and help you understand what might be going on and that there are solutions to your problem, just have to dig a little.

If you get obsessed with something.

I think it can. If you are on ocassionally to unwind

think thats fine. but all day? I dont think prolonged computer use

is good, because to do that you must be neglecting other stuff.

You cant be always on here, and living a fulfilling life out there.

Balance Balance Balance

Yes. It denies you the satisfaction of real human contact. It's like a substitute for something else. A Fake.
