It is? Only my salt shakers are round. The box I fill them up with is, well, box shaped! The salt I use for the water softener is in a bag, not round. The salt I use to melt the ice in the driveway is also in a bag which isn't round.

A round container has more volume than any other kind. Salt is cheap and they give you as much of it for a small area in packaging.

Who said so? This is a ridiculous question ever! A better question would be "why do they put rice in the salt container?"
