No the dog isnt any of those breeds he is half lab half something lol. He has a few issues he doesnt bite he will bark at people he doesent know till they get close then he will let them pet him and such. When he gets excited i know its weird but he will pee a little bit. Also recently he has had some excessive sheding but thats nothin out of the ordinary for him he has been to the vet and such.

Well i figured i would let you guys know. I brought him to the humane society today......it was heartwrenching expecially taking off his little name tag and him trying to run and jump in the car with us . But im sure they will be able to find him a good home that we cant provide for him right now. They also promised to call if they cant find a home for him im not gonna let them kill him.

If you give this organization a call, they have many connections in your area, and will at least point you to a good rescue or foster home>
North Shore Animal League America
25 Davis Avenue
Port Washington, NY 11050
516-883-7575
Also, go to http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=4
put in your own zip code, to find the Katrina rescue envolved shelter nearest you..One of them on your area will help you place your dog, or perhaps even be able to help your family....

Try putting an add on Craigslist. A friend and i did this for two stray dogs we found and were trying to find homes for. We found both dogs good homes after a week of finding them. Be careful to interview the person or family though. Here are the questions my friend and I ask to find a good home:
1) Where will the dog live and sleep?
2) Have you ever owned a dog before? What happened to it?
3) How many hours a day will someone be home with the dog?
4) Why do you want this dog?
I hope this helps, im sorry you have to give up a member of your family.

Most humane societies are very good but will use euthanasia as a last resort. Well, can you not tell them that your dog weighs 20 lbs.? Is anyone going to weigh him? It's worth a shot. Some people will look the other way. Go to the newspaper and raise a fuss about your displaced family and the unfairness of taking your family member (the dog) away. These are just ideas. If you must give up the dog, then know that the Humane Society is usually the best alternative. Good luck and I pray your life gets on a great path.

Wow, that's sad and awful. I know the Humane Society of the US (HSUS) has been working hard to rescue Katrina dogs, but I haven't had direct experience and don't know what happens in the local situations. Go to
http://hsus.org/
and scroll down to the bottom right side of the page where it says "contact us" and show them your question. Someone in a situation like yours should get some extra help from the Humane Society.
You might also try a letter of appeal to FEMA. Back in 1994 after the Northridge earthquake I got them to reverse a decision (it wasn't about a pet) by writing a letter with a reasonable argument. Sometimes if you ask, you get. As you are painfully aware, FEMA is a pretty messed up bureaucracy and you might get a different answer from a different person, especially if you appeal to their sense of compassion. They know they've done you wrong and might be willing to ease your world a little bit now. I hope things work out and you get to keep your dog!

My heart just breaks for you. First the Katrina tragedy, now having to give up your beloved pet.
Is there not any way you can talk to these people and see if they will make an exception? I hope they will, for your sake.
I got a dog from the city dog pound. He was picked up in July, I didn't go there for a dog until nearly October. They had a "do not destroy" card on his cage. Over 3 months, but those workers knew he was a good dog, and they were not going to put him down until someone adopted him.
So, if you have to take your dog to the humane society, be assured that they will see what a good dog he is. Make sure to tell the workers your story, so they will take extra care with your dog and promoting his adoption.

The humane society will try to find your dog a good home. As long as he isn't really aggressive and mean, they will find a new home for him. Especially since your case deals with the hurricane, there are many people out there that will want to lend a hand (god bless the usa.) The humane society will do whatever they can to find your dog a home. I have a 3 year old dog and I know it would be difficult to give him up. I am sorry to hear about your situation and I wish the best for your family and your dog.

Try to look out side ur area where u r now or where u will be. If he's a good dog I'm pretty sure that the humane society will be able to have him adopted. I know that it will probally hurt like crazy to give him up but it's better than the streets. U r probably not the only 1 in this situation thanks to fema's red tape bs. I hope u have a good holiday w/ him. I feel bad 4 everyone who was caught in Katrina!! Good luck!!

Try to put an ad in the paper if it's a must. Humaine societys are packed as is. An animals chances are slim of getting out of there alive sometimes. I have several friends at the humaine socities here, and they're great people, but you think, they've got 200 or more animals at all times to care for. Also they spay and nueter the animals, which is a must with all the homeless. The chances are better for your dog if you personally help to find him/her a good home!

You didn't mention the dog's breed. Some shelters are under orders to not adopt out certain breeds of dog. For example, if you give a Staffordshire Terrier (or APBT or other dog commonly known as a "pit bull") to the wrong shelter it may be a trip straight to death row. If you have "pit bull," Rottweiler, Akita, or Chow Chow try to find a rescue operation (foster care group) instead of a shelter for the dog's safety. There are many organizatins like that across the country.

That is a hard situation. It seems you have access to a computer though right? I would look up animal shelters for katrina victems. I know many people have donated money to keep shelters going and many of those are 'no kill' shelters unless the animal is a threat. I have even heard of programs where people will foster animals until you can take them back. I would have offered that myself if I had a yard. :/ Good luck. I wish you the best.
