I like the idea of colored sprinkles. You could also do colored sugar...comes in little jars at the grocery store. OR...you could crush up three Heath candy bars and sprinkle that over the top for a really tasty treat. You can buy a bag of mini M&M's or mini chocolate chips in the baking isle at the store. That's also fun. Regardless, let me just point out...there is nothing boring about a frosted chocolate cake. I've never seen anyone turn down a piece because it wasn't bright enough! People will love it, whether you add more color to it, or not!! Good luck!!

Two easy things I can think of:
1) If you have some white frosting you can make a marble affect on the top of the cake just by putting some white frosting on top and then mixing the choc & white together by dragging a toothpick through. If you don't have white frosting you can always make it by mixxing eaqual parts water and powdered sugar together to make a glaze.
2) you can take a paper doilie the kind you get at the craft store. Lay it on top of the cake and then sprinkle with powdered sugar. This makes a really pretty design. If you can't get your hands on a doilie, you can make something similar. Remember how you use to make paper snowflakes in school? Make one of those and lay it on the cake before you sprinkle.

Okay, here is what you want to do, slice the cake in half diagonally. Then spread some jelly or jam in the middle then put the top back on and frost the cake. It's a little surprise in the center. You can also put marshmallow cream in the center. It's simple and quick and everyone will be surprised. I hope that I've been some help to you.

This one's easy. Mix a simple frosting with shortening and powdered sugar. If you want it thinner, add a touch of water. If you want it to dry, add a bit of cream of tartar. Add some coloring to it. Pink looks great on chocolate. So does yellow. Fill a pastry bag with the icing and pipe it out. Piping icing is not as hard as it looks. You can even put it in a Ziploc bag and cut a tiny hole in a corner and pipe it out; it just won't be quite as pretty as when you use an actual pastry bag with tips. Anyway, if you want to make it extra colorful, add some sprinkles... or cherries, strawberries, or bananas... or crushed peppermints... etc.
Happy decorating!

after icing the choc cake, let it set while you get any pretty color of icing prepared.......you can add food coloring to white icing to get the color you want, put it in the microwave for a few seconds...about 30 seconds....just long enough to make it thin enough to pour and pour it in the middle of the cake and let it run/drizzle down the sides and add some fruit and some whip cream to the center of the cake (do this part right before serving or the whip cream will melt away)...fruit like some kind of berries and oranges....

Since it's Christmas time, use candy canes. You can break them into peices and put them around the edges and then lay two of them on the top of the cake.

Try sprinkling cocoa on the top, or powdered sugar if you want it to stand out even more. Maybe colored sprinkles if you want it to be fun.
