I have twin sons who are 2.5 years old and one of them still has problems going down stairs without help. He will climb down backwards. Going up is a little hard for him at times too...sometimes he still crawls up them. My other one on the other hand, he is little Mr. climber...hes been doing the whole step thing for awhile now. I would say around the time he was turning 2. I think coordenation is different for every child. Stairs scare me though! I still keep a close watch on both. Good luck!
Ok after re reading...i see i misunderstood the question! i thought you meant walking up and down them....my kids crawled up and down around 9 months old or so. Sorry for the misunderstanding!!

My daughter first started climbing everything stairs included at around 10 months but after one slip and fall she refuses to go down stairs by herself she will go up them but not down. Shes almost 2 now and we are considering putting up child height handrails on the steps for her.
Every child is different but Ive noticed that most begin to climb as soon as they start pulling up and crawling.

I think it depends on when they start walking. My two were walking at 9 1/2 months and 11 months so after a couple months of walking I would hold their hand as they went up and down the stairs or they would scoot on their butts. They were on their own by 1 1/2 years.

Mine is a small slim boy and he started when he is 10 months or so...Depends upon the weight of the baby a lot...when he has already started walking...He may catch up soon...Moreover they will climb soon...but cant get down the stairs that easily...It may take another 6 months:D

my grand daughter turned 2 in September and has been doing a good job on the stairs for about a month now.

( she goes down backwards.....but holds the rail and climbs up one step at a time )

my oldest was about a year old, right after she started walking and my youngest was about 10 months, shortly after she started walking. BUT, this is at my mom's house. My mom has the very low steps so they were easy for my babies to climb.

You mean crawling with both hands and feet? When he was about 9 months.

He started to walk up and down the stair by himself before he turns 22 months.

Do you mean standing up and walking up/down the stairs? My oldest was right around 2. My youngest is almost 3 and still needs occasional help.

If you mean crawling up/down by themselves, it was under a year.
