Presently I work in the healthcare field in Canada, My partener is a US citizen and I am Canadian debating on a change. I was wondering which route is easier and/or quicker to apply to work in America: A greencard or what kind visa would be my best bet? Whats the difference between a greencard and visa, other than the cost? thanks

A green card is the equivalent to permanent residency. It is for good (unless acquired from a new marraige). A visa is temporary. It is not meant for permanent immigrants, only temporary workers.

If you want to immigrate to the states permanently as a skilled worker. read here:

A Green Card allows you to live and work with any employer in the US (including working for yourself). In addition, the Green Card allows you to accumulate credit towards the ability to apply for US citizenship after a few years. In contrast, a work visa would normally allow you to work for a specific employer, usually for a specific period of time, and without accumulating any time credit for US citizenship. In reality, the Green Card is a visa for immigration, while other work visas are called non-immigrant visas. The later are easier and faster to get than the Green Card, but of course, the Green Card one is more valuable. However, if you want to work in the US as soon as possible, you probably should first consider a work visa, and thereafter, should you decide to stay in the US for the long run, you can look at Green Card options. If your plans for working in the US are a few years away, you may wish to consider applying for the Green Card. Most likely for both types, you will need a US employer to sponsor you. If you do marry your US partner, you can apply to get the Green Card through the marriage.
