Speak more.

You think I am being funny, but memorize this phrase:

"How do you say?"

Ask that everywhere; at the laundrotmat, at McDonald's, at Wal-Mart, at the school, the job, the bar. Just ask:

"How do you say...?"

I had a student move here directly form Turkey and she spoke NO ENGLISH at all! She was in 6th grade at the time. I spoke NO TURKISH at all! She became my responsibility to teach to speak English! Oh brother! We just talked a lot! I pointed out several things all day long and told her the name of it and she would repeat it. Then we began putting together sentences. If she made a mistake of how to say something, I would tell her the correct way to say it. I had a daughter just older than she was and hooked them up as friends so she would have kids her own age to converse with, too. Their first slumber party was hilarious to hear her yacking away with the other girls!

She basically learned by TALKING WITH OTHERS as much as she could! Being a pre-teenage girl, that was a fairly simple task! She is now a beautiful 20 year old young lady who speaks fluently and understands the language well!

go to the library and get audio books on tape. with no "picture" you will more fully concentrate on the spoken word.

you could also get some tapes on learning english, but the books (stories) will be more interesting and hold your interest longer.
