Have seen small pictures, in the past, of places like this, but was wondering if they do exist. Long streets that sell computer parts, cameras and gadgets instead of the chickens, fish, dogs and spices.

You will find better deals in Hong Kong than in the mainland of China. Japanese electronics are very expensive in mainland China. If buying in Hong Kong, than you need to be wary of your vendor and make sure everything you expected to buy is included in the purchase, HK vendors frequently offer hard to believe prices for high end electronics and then you find out that your missing the expensive perks.. Taiwan is a better place to obtain electronics than mainland or HK.. Cheers

YES! Even though some people see that flea markets are all second hand items..its actually not. Many many aisles at the flea markets are filled with brand new items that you can even find in stores ..but for a much much cheaper price. My parents go there alot to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Its actually cheaper than farmers markets too.

In the bigger cities. Also if you take a train and cross the border from Hong Kong, there is a special industrial area just across the border where you can buy anything and it's cheap! The friend I was with bought 5000 diamond saw blades for cutting gem stones there for a dollar a piece. He'd been paying 47.00 for a similar blade made in Germany. The Chinese blade wasn't quite as good, but in actual use turned out to be almost as good. I carried half of them for him when we left. We each bought an extra suitcase to put them in but you couldn't pick it up. We had to hire guys, and when they were weighed at the airport they were an astounding 380 pounds each! I'd already hurt my back by then, but my friend who lives in Brazil, sold them there for 30.00 dollars a piece. Anyway, you can buy anything in China, but the real fun is shopping the old bazaars. You have to get of the beaten track, but you can find all kinds of really neat old stuff that's authentic. My buddy bought an old sword from a communist in a Mao jacket who swore it had lopped off hundreds of heads. Maybe it had, who knows, and it just neat as hell. They're are a ton of knock offs around, up to and including all kinds of electronics. I think I would avoid that kind of stuff. It looks good, at least on the outside. I had good luck with clothes. Cheap as hell, (2.00 for designer shirts, 3.00 for pants) and some of them lasted good. China is fun, I loved it and although I traveled all over the world, I have never felt safer. It's been about five years now, but I went clear across the country and never got ripped off, even by a cab driver.

I am in China at the moment and the answer is yes. However I wouldn't trust anything electronic you buy in a market like that, in fact I don't buy anymore electronic stuff here. Bought a bunch of SD cards and memory sticks, seemed to work okay at the time we bought them. Got them back to the hotel and only the first 10meg would work. Forget taking it back to where you bought it. I don't know how they do it. Another Friend bought a mp-3 player, it worked fine when he bought it. Got back to the hotel and it didn't work. He went back to the guy with it hidden in his pocket, looked at another one which worked did a switch with the one in his pocket. Got back to the hotel and that one didn't work either.

Not in long streets like that. At least not in the developed cities like Beijing and Shanghai. There are huge shopping malls (each bigger than a building of Macys) in each city dedicated to IT products -- computers, cameras, phones etc -- with lots of touts waving their pamphlets and trying to get you into their shops. We call them IT malls.
