considering Christians have slaughtered millions of nonbelievers I'd say they don't adhere to that rule

Say, tell us, where did you see this quote once?
What this means is this. If by chance you are spreading the Word of God to unbelievers, and they get upset at you for feeding them more of the Word than they can digests at one time, and they strike you for this reason, then offer them the other cheek as a learning experience for yourself.
Most of the people of this planet cannot and will not accept a different doctrine then the one they have grown up with. They fight it when another Gospel is preached to them.
New Christians are infused with the Holy Spirit and have not the discipline yet that comes with time. They want everyone to have this gift that they have just received. Everyone does not see things like new Christians and they fight.
Hope this help you. Read the Bible for the full story.><>

Actually, I think that Christians "turn the other cheek" far more often than you may realize.
Just the other day, in fact, someone treated me somewhat badly in a way that I did not deserved to be treated. I won't get into what it was, but let's just say that it was pretty unfair.
Anyway, I could have "given it right back" to the person -- but I didn't. I turned the other cheek, so to speak, because to do otherwise would have been a case of me stooping to his level. It would also have made an unpleasant situation even more unpleasant.
As it turns out, a couple days went by and the person apologized. I think my "taking things in stride" was one reason why this whole thing came to a happier ending than it might have otherwise.

If there's any Christians out there actively wanting whacked in the chops, then Death Industries can oblige, for a nominal fee.

Literally, if a Roman Soldier were to smote you on one side of your face, would you fight him or let him smite you on the other side too?
If your wife were to slap you on one side of your face, should you knock her down and out OR let her work off her anger on the other side of your face?
Figuratively, if the scoffers assail us and our Christ, do we condemn them or do we turn the other cheek and try again?

We are asked to take minor insults gracefully and not to retaliate. When the crime is bigger, then we need to let courts to take care of the problem. It is not easy to take slapping. We all fall short from the glory of God.

in the old testament, the bible talks about 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,' but in the new testament, jesus overturns all of that into a loving, forgiving atmoshpere. it isnt that christians allow ourselves to be doormats, but we try to forgive quickly.
