First, it is not required that the doctor give your mother antibiotic after she has root planing done. In fact, unless she has an infection, there is no need.
Most likely, the hygienist who is doing the root planing will get your mother numb and only do half of her mouth at a time. When the anesthetic wears off, your mother may experience some tenderness. What I usually tell my patients to do is grab 2 tall glasses. Fill one with warm salt water and leave the other empty. Then, sit in front of the TV for a half hour and swish with the salt water. Take a sip from the full glass, swish for 30 seconds and spit it into the empty glass. Repeat this for the full half hour, and the swelling and discomfort in her gums should subside.
Also, have her ask her hygienist for Peridex or Periomed. These are periodontal rinses that help to kill the bacteria that is going to be moved around during the root planing.
It is not scary at all. I promise!

I have had it done and I had no pain at all. The reason I had no pain is I have a dentist who believes no one should feel pain in a dentist office. They gave me intervenous in the hand that kinda put me in a twilight sleep while they done it. I was never totally out but just enough so you didn't feel or care what they were doing. After it was done I can't say I experienced enough dis comfort to be concerned about. Of course all dentists are not equal, there are the concerned ones, like I have and there are some I call Horse doctors. Your mom should discuss it with her dentist and tell him she wants it done in a way to not cause and pain.

My husband had it done. It did hurt, but not too bad. They will give her pain meds to take for a few days.

Make sure they give her an antibiotic (or a prescription for one) when it's over. IT IS REQUIRED. My husbands dentist forgot, and his entire face swelled to twice it's size.

It doesn't pain, as it's done under anaesthesia. However, after the scaling, the diet as prescribed by your dentist has to be followed, any irregulatities in diet is bound to affect you (it's related to the brain)

THE DENTIST WILL GIVE YOUR MOM ANESTHETIC TO NUMB THE PAIN. MUCH DEPENDS ON HOW DEEP AND AGGRESSIVE THE SCALING IS DONE. SOME PATIENTS REQUIRE NO ANESTHETIC, OTHERS REQUIRE MUCH.

if it starts to get unbearable they will give her novocaine, and her gums will be very tender and sore for a few days or so. but it will be worth it if she can get rid of the periodontal disease and keep her teeth..
