Yes the torque converter can make your car sluggish but it will not effect the idle. Your problem is probably in the electronic side of the engine. Have you had it scanned for codes? Shuddering and clunking into gear can happen if the engine isn't firing right. Some auto parts store will loan you a scanner and tell you what the codes mean. The computers that shops use however give much more acurate information which helps eliminate false codes leading to replacing the wrong parts.

Those symptoms you described are similar to what I experienced a few years ago with my plow truck in a snow storm. I had reverse but all forward gears were toasted. I had a rebuilt Motorcraft E4OD tranny and torque converter put in ($2500), it lasted 23 miles, yes I said 23 miles, then another tranny/torque converter-still wasn't right, then another tranny/converter, that one finally was right. I don't wish this headache on anyone and hope your problem can be quickly and cheaply resolved. Personally, I would start thinking what the truck is worth and how much $ you want to pour into it.
Good Luck!

pull your dipstick on the trans and see if it smells burned! If it smells bad; drop the pan on the trans and change the filter, check to see if there is a plug on the torque converter and if so drian that too. check the contents of the pan when you drain it .......look for metalic pieces or flakes.... if you see alot of metal particles take it to a reputable shop and have it gone through. If there isn't alot of junk in the pan clean everything real good put on a new gasket and fill it up. should take about 6 - 9 Qts. of fluid !

Before you go through too much trouble with the torque coverter make sure you check all of your vacuum lines...especially the ones heading toward yours transmission. Vacuum tells the diaphram to tell the solenoids to open your valves in the valve body. I'm not a transmission guy, but I guess I'm saying check the easy cheap stuff first.

Sounds like low fuel pressure...a stuck EGR valve or vacuum leak...if it works good at full throttle I'd go with EGR.... if not I'd check the fuel pressure.
