Basically you work and do whatever the people above you tell you to do. My husband is in the guard and spent 12 months in Iraq. It definitely has it's perks with the benefits but it's not just a free ride. You have to be committed to your job and to serving the time for your country. It is one of the most honorable things that a person could do for the the US. God Bless all the troops that serve!

Just about anything. The Army is roughly split into three groups, combat, combat support, and combat service support.
Combat is just that. Kill people and break things. Some soldiers do this by using mulit-million dollar attack helocopters and Hellfire missiles. Some do it with computerized cannon. Some use M-1 tanks that have armor thicker than some World War 2 warships had. Others do it the old fashoned way, with grenades and guns. This includes snipers, Rangers and Special Forces.
Combat support are the people that directly support the combat troops. They include Signal, who run the communications and computers, Military Police, and Military Intelligence.
Combat Service Support do pretty much civlilain type jobs, only they wear a uniform and pass a PT test while doing it. These folks are the lawyers (JAG) medical, administrative types, the band, etc. There are less of these jobs than there used to be because these jobs can easily be filled by contractors, and the Army feels that soldiers are more useful doing combat and combat support duties rather than running mess halls or finance operations.
Not everyone has what it takes for every job. Very few folks make it to Ranger school, and even less make it through. It is mostly about endurance. If you can go without sleep for several days you can probably make it. Military Intelligence is probably the hardest branch to get into as you have to be both very smart and pass a security background check. Special Forces have to have the strengths of both M.I. and Rangers, and they normally have to know a couple of extra languages and they MUST be very good with people and great teachers too. Mostly it depends on if the Army needs someone in that particular job at the right time. Basicly you can do anything you want, IF you have the qualifications and they need someone to do it.

The same thing that all the other branches of the military do.
I, do solemnly swear, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.
Semper Fi
Enlisted is a little different, you swear to obey your officers legal orders as stated in the UCMJ.

I am an AH-64 Apache Armament / Electrical and Avionics Systems Senior Supervisor - MOS 15Y4O with an additional speciality of Aviation Safety.
We are the folks that load, unload, and maintain all the weapons systems and their associated components, the wiring and electrical systems along with all the radios and other black boxes that the aircraft uses.
When you see these birds flying and firing, it is because a person on the ground made it all happen before the pilots got into the bird.

Use your rank to try to get gullible naive privates to sleep with you, get them drunk, then get them knocked up, and marry them.
Oh yeah I'm a 25S Satellite communications, I sit in a air conditioned building and make sure my equipment is working properly. Oh and I'm also a Private married to Narblaster, pregnant and loving every minute of it.
