My husband wants an acoustic guitar just for sitting around playing. He's an intermediate player. What's a good, inexpensive one to get him for Christmas? Has anyone tried a Takamine Jasmine? Do they sound OK? I don't know anything and wanted to surprise him.

I don't know what you are thinking of $pending, but my oldest brother is a long-time professional guitarist/musician/studio musician who performed with some major names (Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Smokey Robinson) over the years. He swears by Gibson and Fender; he also likes Yamaha. Now normally we're talking $500 ^.
However, I just did a search on the Yahoo engine Shopping for guitars and found a Fender DG-8S acoustic ($499) on sale for $199. I'd say that's probably going to be about the best buy you're going to find for Christmas, except it's doubtful that you'd get it in time.
There's a Yamaho ($250) on sale for $150. That's another Xlent buy.
At any rate, the link is:

I've now skimmed through about 5 pages, and the ones I am finding that are $200 or less are the Fender (WOW!) and the Yamaha.
If you have $200, you can't go wrong. Fender is absolutely the CREAM. IF you dont' want to spend that much, the Yamaha for $150 would be Xlent!
I think if you can afford $200, and if your husband is an intermediate player (fairly serious) a $200 Fender would blow him away! If you don't want to spend $200, the $150 Yamaha just can't go wrong!

Merry Christmas, darlin'! And I think your husband is one lucky guy!

Good luck for you there are many reasonably priced guitars out there. Takamine is a great guitar but not inexpensive, in my opinion. My son recently bought an Aria acoustic for less than $200 that's a fine guitar and a lot like mid eighties Alvarez boxes. Dean makes a few inexpensive models and hold up pretty well. Certain makes are randomly bad like First Act and Johnson. If you don't mind spending a little more, around $350, you can't miss with a Yamaha or an Epiphone.
Hope this helped.

i've only tried 2 different acoustic-electric takamines. One of them sounds pretty good but i wouldnt say it's worth the 500 dollars it costs. the other one sounds amazing and is around 700 i think. worth it. I dont know the exact models. You can check reviews at www.musiciansfriend.com and for pricing comparisons, but it's safest to visit a local music store and test a guitar before you make a purchase, online or wherever. I have an F series acoustic yamaha that was pretty cheap. I think it's an entry level model but ive been playing it for a few years now and i'd say im intermediate. it still suits me fine playing leisurely.

One of my friends just bought a Tak and was a bit disappointed with it. Other friends have Taylors and Yamahas - both provide good sound.

I currently drive an Ovation Celebrity - good if you like that style. My next acoustic guitar will probably be something from the Martin family - but I need to save a few more pennies.

As far as electric guitars go - gotta stick with the Gibson family! Les Pauls or SG's make great workhorses.

Takamine makes an acceptable mid-priced acoustic guitar yes indeed. For a decent one expect to pay 2 or 3 hundred at least your husband will appreciate it.

Not sure about inexpensive but I love my Takamine (It's a blue cutaway acoustic electric) and my boyfriend swears Takamines are the best!

Good luck! Merry Christmas!
