Yes the bible says that it is a sin to purposely alter the body. But I am tattooed and pierced and still love God. In your heart if religion gets in your way don't do it but if your Grandmother means that much to you do it. Just think what she would want you to do or you will be looking at something that brings you joy of representing your Grandmother and the pain of a sin.
Actually I wouldnt do it though because the bible also says its a sin to mourn. One should be happy that the one they love wont have to feel earthly pain.
Yes I'm tattooed

Okay there is a verse in Leviticus that states not to mark your body or cut yourself for the dead. These were practiced by pagans and they did this for fertility money etc. God did not want the Israelites to participate in this sort of behaviour. This is old testament law and if you read the verse above that verse it says men should not cut the corners of their beards or hair, in a nutshell don't shave. All that being said, it is not wrong to get a tattoo if you are a christian in fact I have Christian tattoos.
Those judging Extremeist bible belt christians best not start throwing their judgments at me either, I can come at you from all angles and I will win. Why don't you focus your energy on loving people instead of pointing the finger you jerks, no wonder half the country hates christians...
Anyways the bible even speaks of God giving us his mark when we get to heaven and Christs name will be on his leg...
So tattoos are not bad unless of course you blatently cuss swear or have porn or anything else having to do with that printed on your body, of course if you are a christian then you wouldn't get those things done.
I have a triquetra, a holy spirit dove with flames, Wings with the word Frail above them, and the greek alpha omega symbol with a ribbon around my ankle above it with the first part of Revelations 1:8 I think that's the refrence anyways it is a red letter vers and it says I am the Alpha and Omega... The large Alph omega on my foot represents Christ and the ribbon with his words are just that his words. I am getting the other foot done in January, it will say adonai in hebrew and then the ribbon on that side will say "this is my covanent my blood poured out" in Hebrew. That verse is in Mark and is a red letter verse as well.

No, it's completely fine to get a tattoo. You'll find lots of religious people who would tell you no. Some people might tell you that there's a verse in the Old Testament that says it says not to get piercings and tattoos, but that was only because God didn't want the Israelites to practice the pagan religious of the countries surrounding them. That was the Law, but we are not under the law anymore and it's about our hearts, not what's on our bodies. Is God going to send a man who repented to hell because he has a tattoo on him....I don't think so. Not to mention that God all throughout the Bible says to 'Remember', so I think that getting a tattoo in memory of your grandmother would be a good idea and would help with your own grieving process. Happy Tattooing!

Hi Leslie,
Sorry for your loss. But, You have all these people telling you that the Bible forbids tattoos and you should listen. The Old Testament, Leviticus forbade tatoos.
Honey, do you think your Grandmas would want you to get a tattoo to remember her? Death is a part of life, and you remeber the Dead by celebrating their life and learning from them--not by marking your body.
Its not about "going to hell", of course God wont send you to hell for a tatoo--but God wants you to be beautful and be the best while you are alive--and being beautful is not marking up your body with dark, filthy looking marks.
Follow your Bible.

I have Tattoos and I am a youth pastor. In Leviticus it speaks against markings for the dead.
It is awesome that you want to do something to remember your grandmother but a tattoo probably is not the best idea.

The bible says in the old testament thats your body is the temple of the holy spirit and people take that as u should treat it like a temple...with the highest respect and dignity. some people take that as u shouldnt mark your body in ways like tattooing. a few verses down it says that men shouldnt shave their beards or cut there hair either...so yeah.
These references in the begining of the old testament-like in liviticus- are talking about the customs of those times...not all as laws for us right now.
its honestly up to what you believe God will think...i say go for gold! xoxo

Not at all. There's something out there called legalism. It's just a group of people trying to tell you what to do. It's your body, treat it good. But God doesn't say anywhere in the bible that tatoos are wrong. God's given us free will and wisdom. Free will is given to us. Wisdom we have to search for. But it's worth it. Ciao.

Im sorry about your loss it must be hard. Living in a family filled with preachers, I have learned that the Bible says that any markings on your body wrong. People would debate that but i say it is wrong. you can remember your grandmother in other ways(not meaning to sound harsh) but markings on your body is said in the Bible to be wrong. Im sorry again about your grandmother.
