When does the spirit ascend to heaven after passing on. Does it lay in a sleep state until resurrection day or does it go to heaven or where ever immediately?

12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, [I say], and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Ecc 12:7 And the dust goes back to the earth as it was, and the spirit goes back to God who gave it.

Now what is man?

Gen 2:7 And the Lord God made man from the dust of the earth, breathing into him the breath of life: and man became a living soul.

Gen 3:19 With the hard work of your hands you will get your bread till you go back to the earth from which you were taken: for dust you are and to the dust you will go back.

So man returns to the earth where he came from!

No what of the spirit that returns to God?

Gen 6:3 And the Lord said, My spirit will not be in man for ever, for he is only flesh.

Job 14:10 But man comes to his death and is gone: he gives up his spirit, and where is he?
Job 14:11 The waters go from a pool, and a river becomes waste and dry;
Job 14:12 So man goes down to his last resting-place and comes not again: till the heavens come to an end, they will not be awake or come out of their sleep.

So we can see that man goes to the grave UNCONSCIOUSLY and the spirit goes back to God who gave it! This spirit IS NOT the concious man. Man IS NOT immortal! Man is dust and returns to dust! He lies there until the resurrection!

Perhaps the spirit in man, that goes back to God, is a record of the mans personality and character while on earth! But is definitely NOT the conscious man!

The Bible tells us " My father's house has many mansions, and I will prepare a place for you". All of those mansions aren't empty.They are filled with the spirits that have passed on before. Here's something to think of. What about animals? They are without sin? Are they in a separate heaven?

Jesus told the thief on the cross next to Him that "today you will be with Me in paradise." That seems to tell us that we will ascend to heaven immediately upon death. Study the Word so you will know for yourself and not be dependant on what others say.
