"...mental illness is not spiritual, although its effects may indeed hinder and be a burden in one's striving toward spiritual progress. In a letter written on behalf of the Guardian to a believer there is this further passage:

"Such hindrances (i.e. illness and outer difficulties),
no matter how severe and insuperable they may at
first seem, can and should be effectively overcome
through the combined and sustained power of
prayer and of determined and continued effort."

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 284)

"As to the question of evil spirits, demons and monsters, any references made to them in the Holy Books have symbolic meaning. What is currently known among the public is but sheer superstition."

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 512)

In answer to those who may ask you what the stand is of your religion on the subject of demons, you can say without hesitation that the concept of Satan or the Devil as an actual being opposed to God is rejected by the Bahá'í teachings but that the term is understood by Bahá'ís to mean the promptings of self and desire and the dark side of human nature.

No, and I have a major problem with religious people who propagate that belief. It's disrespectful, archaic, ignorant and always provokes a response in defense of the mentally ill from me.

Look, if we can get sick in our bodies, why can't we get sick in our minds? If our bodies can become disabled, why can't our minds? And that's only the beginning of the falacies regarding mental illness and demon possession. So many good people have been hurt by this false belief, and it's got to be stopped.

Demonic possession, like belief in a supernatural god, is a left- over from our past. Today we know better than to believe in such fairy tales.

Why oh Why would Satan waste his time possessing a mentally ill person?

Besides that, after Jesus returned to Planet H (Heaven) the COG (Council of Government) on the Planet did away with Hell, and limited Satan's powers to only his "sales pitch". -- Contrary to movie depictions.
