Dear Emmeline,
It was a sacrifice because Jesus was without sin. Although he was accussed of being blasphemous -- he was not. Also if you read the narrative in the gospel- the priests had insighted the crowd to free Barrabas (the other prisoner).
When the priests and guards came to cease Jesus in the Garden of Gesthemane Peter chopped off one of the guards ear and Jesus restored that guards hearing and told Peter that he could have called down a legion of angels. In that way we see that Jesus volunteering gave himself over to those who had plotted against Him- giving himself as a sacrifice -- when he could have easily freed Himself. When Pilate put Christ on trial it was actually Pilate who was on Trial.
Hope this helps. Do feel free to email me if the question or any other aspect continues to "bug ya." God Bless.
Kindly,
Nickster

But it WAS His choice. Verse 12 says He OFFERED Himself a sacrifice....
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
10:13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
10:15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Because Jesus is God, as well as a totally sinless man, no one, not even the devil himself, had the authority to take his life.
Jesus PERMITTED himself to be crucified, because so doing, he allowed evil to bring about its' own destruction.
Satan was duly judged for his crime against Christ, stripped of all that he had earlier gained from Adam's sin, and left in desolation.
Jesus was raised from the dead, appointed the new head of all mankind, and our redemption was truly at hand.
So it really was Jesus' choice to die, as nobody could take the life of the sinless son of God, without his express permission.

We are also told that HE could have called angels to save HIMSELF if HE had decided to do so. He performed many miracles that were seen by thousands of people. A small number of them were written in the BIBLE. I believe that HE gave HIMSELF as a sacrifice and not that HE was unable to save himself! Have a great evening and a wonderful Christmas. Just keep reading and studying as we all do!

Jesus' death fulfilled the scriptures spoken concerning Him. Blood must be shed for the forgiveness of sins. God the Father had a mission for Jesus on earth and Jesus came simply to fulfill that mission however God had it figured to be.
Besides that, Jesus was also 100% Divine, fully God as well as fully man on earth. He could've EASILY gotten off the cross and smote all the Romans. He submitted and humbled Himself to indeed volunteer to be a sacrificial offering on our behalf. He could've gotten out of it if He wanted to.

It was his choice. Jesus Christ was God almighty. The beautiful part of the plan is that he wasn't compelled to the cross, although he was sentenced by the Jews/Romans, he went willingly. Read Psalm 22 it describes the suffering servant pretty well.

Jesus is all powerful and he is the Lord of the earth. don't ya think that he would be able to take himself down from the cross and punish all that crucified him? But did he, I don' think so!

It was planned all along, from the time he was born. He was born for that ultimate purpose. He knew what was going to transpire and how, yet he did not make any attempts to get himself out of it, that was the sacrafice. Death was the result. Ressurection was the reward.

do you not believe that he could have fought against those that were falsely accusing him? do you not belive that he could have had a thousand angels at his side- the authority of the day may have physically sentenced him but He willingly walked to the cross, He willingly took the punishment for our sins- He humbly and willingly chose to accept the punishment that was not his

at ant time He could have call down 10,000 angels to keep him from the cross.
he chose to let them crucify Him. when they came for him in the garden when He spoke they fell to their knee from the power he had in is voice. if He had not let them take Him, then they could not have.
