No poverty isn't child abuse. Poverty is when your income is well below the standards of living for most people in your area. You can be considered living in poverty but still be able to raise your children and feed and clothe them, just not the kind of meals everyone else enjoys, nor the in kind of clothing. They may wear a lot of hand me downs, or clothes from resale shops, but that doesn't mean they don't look nice and clean.

If poverty is preventing you from feeding your child, sure. If you're not getting the assistance available to you, and your child suffers because of that...yes.

My Mom grew up poor as dirt. My grandparents should have been on assistance, but they were too proud. So, my Mom went to school hungry, got teased horribly and she still suffers from a lack of self-esteem because of it. While other kids were eating lunch, my Mom was sitting in the bathroom hungry.

In N. America we are lucky. Poverty here is a a lot different then poverty in Africa. Some people define poverty as not being able to meet the latest fashion trends. For me, it's living on less then $40,000 for a family of 3.

poverty is not child abuse. poverty is basically where your income is way way way below the national average. pretend the national average for annual income is 25 ooo dollars. your income is 5 thousand. your in poverty. poverty is a condition many people have problems getting out of ebcause of the 1. the job market and 2. they dont have the skills to get a better job. so why would you think it was abuse. i make only 8500 a year but my son is well taken care of. he might not have the newest or best toys or books or clothes but he has what he needs, lots of love, clothes and a roof over his head and food.

I doubt it cuz they don't take your kids away for being too poor, you get more help.. WIC, Food Stamps, money for housing, etc... I knew someone who thought if you want a raise, have another kid... how stupid...
There are poverty guidlines for each state... like a family of 3 has to make less than a certain dollar amount to be considered poverty... and so forth for a family of 4, 5, etc...
This is funny: when I was pregnant with my first, my MIL-to-be gave my Husband-to-be a paper that showed the income level for poverty... yeah, we would have had to of had 7 kids in order to be considered poverty!

i think poverty isn't just something to do with lack of money...i believe there are many forms of poverty...

i think that as long as you do whatever it takes to try get a meal for your child, it's not child abuse...abuse is something in which you maliciously hurt someone else...do it on purpose...if you can't feed your child, you're abusing them...it's sad and a horrible feeling and easy to feel guilty, but it's not abuse...unless you sit on your butt all day and do nothing to find a way to get food...

Just because someone is poor doesn't mean they are bad parents. Hard times get you down and you do what you have to to get through it. There is government help people in poverty can apply for to help pay bills and make sure their children are fed, have clothes, and shelter.

Being poor is not child abuse. Not feeding your kids, providing them with shelter or meeting their basic and emotional needs is child abuse. There are so many services available to low income people who are willing to try, if they are taking advantage of them then they are not abusing their kids.

It should be. I grew up poor and on welfare and the majority of the money was spent on cigarettes instead of food and clothes.
wore clothes from the salvation army and my best friend wore sears clotes and guess (which were in back then) I hated being poor and on welfare.
So yes it should be child abuse, there is alot of mental abuse for a child to deal with if they are poor...more well off kids DO make fun of those less fortunate!
