I have a Sony DCR-SR40 30GB HDD Camcorder. I researched quite a bit before buying it and I have to say it exceeds my expectations. It has a 20X optical zoom, touch screen LCD and image stabilization. It does NOT have a viewfinder but so far that hasn't been an issue (I found that most HDD Camcorders don't have one for some reason).
The Li-ion battery it comes with lasts approximately 2 hours (probably a little less if you record continuously). You can buy a high-capacity battery off of Ebay for around $20 US.
It has a docking station that allows you to copy what you have recorded to your PC organized in folders by date. You can also burn directly to DVD through your PC. You also have the option of authoring your own DVD's that you copied to the PC via the software that came with the camera. I found it to be easy to use and more than adequate.
I got mine at Best Buy for $550 American. Due to the nature of hard drives I chose to get the protection plan.
