Galleries in your state / town are the best ways to start out your career. It gives a chance for gallery owners to know you, talk about you and build your reputation. Once that takes place, you can get a feel how your career moves along with time. Of course, it's important to get to know what gallery works for you before you commit to them with a contract. Things to ask yourself like: (1) What sort of works the gallery sells - are they similar to yours? (2) Are they selling commercial or fine art? (3) What sort of payment system does the gallery work with? Are their commission rates a 60/40 , a 50/50 or even a 40/60 percent? How soon are their payment after each sale? Questions like these, and more need to be worked out by you to reach a reasonably comfortable level for you and your prospective gallery owner. But above you, both gallery and artist must like each others' work - and your personality, by the owner. Hope this is a good advice for you.
