From my experience. the prettier birds are male and the less pretty one are the females. I had a cockatiel and it had nice bright colors and it was a male. If they are hand fed they are easier to handle. but when you handle them wear gloves til they are willing to walk onto your hands. confine then in a small area at first then get them to come to you on there own. but if you try to pick them up your finger will be like hamburger. til you learn the proper way to handle them. I learned the hard way. i took mine to the pet shop to have the wings clipped . they will do it in no time because they know how it is done . then watch them and also they can give you some tips on how to treat them . birds are very smart. Mine learned how to talk and sing.It took a while to get them started but after couldn't shut him up. also if it is noisy all you have to do is cover his cage when you are sleeping. Make sure you have toys in their cage to entertain their selves. Good luck with you new friend. God Bless and you have a very Merry Christmas.

Sounds like you have a parakeet! Sometimes younger females will have blue or purple-ish 'noses' when they're very very young and then it whitens up a bit and turns tan or brown if it's a female and stays blue or purple if it's a male. Males are also full of themselves, singing, calling attention to themself, etc. A female will play but she's also happy to sit by herself and twitter. Males are much more boisterous.
You can also try your local petstore, call and ask if they have an experienced wing clipper and have them show you and if you're uncomfortable doing it, don't. Hope this helps!

Yes, they are male. I would suggest taking the birds to the vet to have their wings clipped. It is easy to do it yourself, but for very little cost you can have it done properly without any hassle for yourself.
