Use a strong BHA (beta hydroxy acid), like salycillic acid.
The spots are called "staining", and is excess melanin cells produced during the healing process.
The faster you exfoliate, the quicker new skin will grow and the old scars will disappear.
This is also excellent for oily skin.
Really cheap and good product is Reviva Labs brown spot cream, and their Light Skin Peel. MUST USE SPF products when attempting any lightening procedure or using glycolic of salicyillic acid.

An aspirin mask may also be interesting to try. Crush some aspirin and make a paste adding to clay, apple cider vinegar, aloe vera, glycerin, honey, etc..

Do not use manual exfoliation (walnut hulls, apricot grains, etc) you want to look at chemical exfoliation with fruit acids and enzymes (papaya) and glycolic/salycillic.

If you have access to a student clinic at an ethetics school, you can get extremely low cost facials and glycolic peels, or even microdermabrasion.

All persons of color have the same situation. Winter months are the best times to undertake a skin lightening program.
Other products that are more expensive:
darphin - lightening line
dermatologica - great exfoliators

The light skin peel from Reviva is the cheapest and you can usually pick it up at any Vitamin Shoppe in the USA or order from their website. I put the reviva labs url below.

Best of luck!

Rub your skin very vigorously with an absorbant paper of cloth towel five times per day. As soon as you have completed the rubbing process each time--apply FRESH aloe juice from a fresh picked aloe leaf.
What happens is that the aloe tones down the oil glands and the aloe contains a mucelogenic polysacatide-- that basically restores your skin!
Your face will improve within a week.
If you have a real itchy place that turns black and/or starts growing--get to a dermatologist immediately; it just might be cancer that can be handled in it's incipient stage, instead of the bad alternatives......

I don't think you are much too different. Don't mind the RMV clerk, they know a lot about their job but they are not scientists. If you had a picture of you both posing in the same way I am sure we could see more likenesses. Facial expressions make a difference. Your mom didn't need to dress you differently because it was easy to tell who was who. It is funny how you are taller than her. Were you born first? You are less prone to skin cancer. Life is beautiful and there are miracles everywhere! You were probably been born this way so your family could understand and propagate the dimensions of diversity and tolerance within a very stubborn country like ours.

If you have a Mary Kay consultant in your area, try the Mary Kay Even Complexion Essence. It work for all skin types and will target the pigments in the dark spots (rather than bleaching like some products will).
