When I was teaching, my favorite gift was a coffee mug that said "World's Best Teacher" on it. I think you can get these at Hallmark or other card shops.

You could get him a nice tie, some staionery, a pencil set, or ask someone who is their favorite authors are and buy them a book by them. then if everything else is not right you can also give them a gift card to their favorite resturant.

My mom is a teacher, and her students are constantly swiping her pens, and the supply closet is always out of them. Get him a few packages of Bic's....it's cheap, and you know he'll appreciate them.
