First you have to mask off the base board and around the light swich. Then paint with brush around the doors, and the upper part of walls and lowest part of walls. Then using an extension pole paint walls in an up and down motion.

Once you have dropcloths in place and areas you don't want to paint taped off..then your good to go.
Roll the roller in the tray and cover with paint. Then Roll a stripe onto the wall and work from it, example...roll at an angle one way then the next. This will provide proper coverage and if you are using a good paint, will eliminate a second coat. This works on the open wall areas only. Once you get into narrow spaces..you'll need either a small 2" roller or a brush.

From a Pro Painter
To roll properly and professionally, load your roller and start usually from left to right, place your roller in the center area of the left side and roll straight up and then straight down, back rolling over what you've already rolled leaving no lap lines. Not too much pressure on the roller as it will leave lap lines. Reload often, but not so much paint that it's dripping all over.
Always cut in first brushing out any area where your cut is thicker with heavy brush strokes, you do not want to see brush stokes, and always leave a wet edge to avoid flashing (flashing is where when dry you can see the difference in the cut to the roll, or where you can see a difference where patching is)
Roll only in straight up an down no "W's", I have never in my 20+ years seen a professional painter paint with "W's" like the roller sleeve covers show!
Remember a Carpenter is only as good as his tools, this rule applies to any trade. Use the right nap sleeve for the job as well. I suggest spending the extra $$ on good sleeves, I personally use micro fiber sleeves they wash up beautifully and last for months. I use only Wooster cages and angled sash brushes.

Just remember to paint with the paint rather than the roller. Keep your roller cover saturated and work from one corner to another. Put a slight pressure, very slight!!! on the one side of the roller in the direction that you are working.
