I am a female, 20, who lives with my husband, 21, and 2 male roommates (also in their 20's). They walk around w/o a shirt on, whenever they feel like it, I do not mind. Half the time, they'll walk around in nothing but their boxers. As long as nothing is revealing, I don't see a reason for them to be required to wear shirts. Nothing I haven't seen before.

It all depends on the situation of course. If there were visitors in the house, then shirt on. If you and Mr. Roommate are hanging out at home together, then shirt on or off would be OK. Rule of thumb: When in doubt, put a shirt on.

The best thing for you to do is to ask your roommate for his/her input. It's okay to keep your shirt off as long as someone you live with or one of their visitors is not offended. Otherwise, just keep it on. It's always better to err on the side of caution, especially because wearing or not wearing a shirt isn't a life or death matter.

I think it really depends on the people you're around. I've found that some people are really offended by it while others go shirtless around each other all the time.

Probably you're going to have to (metaphorically) feel your roommate out and see what his thoughts are.

shirt off: eating outside near barbecue during summer
shirt on: eating inside at the table, on the couch, in the kitchen (think chest hair in food-yuck)

shirt off: mowing lawn, showing off your muscular stomach and arms
shirt on: mowing lawn, hiding your beer gut and pasty farmer's tan

shirt off: no clean shirts
shirt on: you better put on something because your girlfriend is coming over and bringing her parents--whom you've never met

shirt off: outside the bank, restaurant, library, business, museum, school
shirt on: inside the bank, restaurant, library, business, museum, school

shirt off: comfort of you before others
shirt on: comfort of others before you
This is the main point. Etiquette boils down to showing respect and consideration for the feelings of others. By wearing a shirt as much as possible, you keep your risk for offending others lower.

It's what ever your ok with and the people around you are ok with. If you don't care and your roommate doesn't care no big deal. If either of you don't like it then big deal.

Assuming both room mates are male, if there is a guest in the room, shirt on out of respect.

Well...a girl roomate or a guy? If it's a female, just about never. It ticks us off that we can't walk around topless. It just makes us jelous. LOL With another guy I don't see it being a problem- unless he asks you not to. Then just be polite!

Good idea to have your shirt off when taking a shower. Not a good idea to have your shirt on when taking a bath.

well i doubt you would ever be my room mate but i think i would ask you not to be shirtless if my parents were there or my sister, and maybe not if my girl friends drop in. but in this society i doubt anyone thinks much of it, im almost 60 so i guess i wasnt used to seeing it as much as we do now.
