The ultimate cause of schizophrenia isn't positively known, but it is thought to be a combination of genetics and environment.
It is not curable, but many cases are treatable and a person with schizophrenia can live a normal life with the proper disease management.

The exact causes still aren't known. Genetics is thought to play some role.
Like many other medical conditions, schizophrenia isn't curable. It IS treatable.

Researchers are looking at a mom's virus during pregnancy and genetics for a cause. There are a lot of medications but it can take several tries and several combos to find something that works. I don't know of a scz person who lives a magically normal life after meds and therapy. But with community support a scz person can stay out of the hospitals and out of jail or homeless. Parents need to be educated in screening kids for scz if there is a family history. The earlier it is treated, the better off the person is later in life. it is best not to use alcohol and street drugs as this aggravates the illness and returns a person to jail, etc. A majority of persons with scz will have help for substance abuse. Nicotine is being studied for its calming effect on scz. It was noticed that scz persons really like their cigs. Best of luck and Merry Christmas!!

my doctor told me you're either born with schizophrenia, it's generic, or you have had something traumatic happen in your life.
and there is no cure, but you can control it with certain medications and therapy. you can live normal lives with schizophrenia as long as you continue with treatment.
hope that helps.
