Silverton, Colorado. Nearby skiing, local extreme skiing, ultra-lighting, colorful locals, good Jack Daniels, really really laid back, and the amazing San Juan mountains. Silverton shuts down to a bare snowy minimum in the winter, so, it's cheap to visit. Durango is easy drive south for outstanding hotel accommodations and restaurants. Indian reservation casino nearby. But, Silverton has some seriously profound naturalistic hidden surprises for people who can stand still and be quiet long enough to notice them.
