Yes, they are cooked already. The preserving process cooks them. But you will need to mash them before you make them into pie.

Actually they are already cooked. I'd say all canned food that is supposed to be cooked is already cooked...it just needs to be heated.
If you're in doubt, remember sweet potatoes are hard when they are raw and soft when they are cooked. So you know the canned ones are cooked.
If you're really skeptical, then read the side of the can and it will say, something like "food has been prepared, to serve, heat for 10 minutes over low flame."
If that's not good enough, then call the 1800 number on the can and ask directly.

But I guarentee you they are already cooked.

All canned food is pre-cooked. That's why with canned veggies/soups/whatever, you just have to heat it up. So your sweet potatoes are cooked already, and just refer to your recipe as how to prepare them for sweet potato pie (very yummy, by the way.)

Miz Elizabeth doesn't know what she's talking about when she says that canned sweet potatoes aren't cooked. Having worked in a canning factory, I can say this with absolute assuredness. Yes, they are cooked. If your recipe calls for cooked sweet potatoes, use them in the manner called for. Othewise, you can eat them cold if you wish, or you can heat them and feast up.

The canned sweet potatoes are NOT cooked already.
Canned or frozen sweet potatoes may be substituted for the fresh form in any recipe calling for cooked sweet potatoes as the starting point. Canned sweet potatoes are generally smaller in diameter because of their better canning qualities. Six to eight canned sweet potatoes are approximately the equivalent of four medium fresh sweet potatoes. One can use the measurement relationship below as a guideline.
