Do you agree that religion was invented because humans just cannot face the possibility that there is nothingness after we die? To me, religion is like a little fairytale that your parents tell you before you go to sleep when you are a child. (because we all know how difficult it is to explain death to a child). I can imagine, that for the longest time, it was ONLY believed by children because it kept them in line. And maybe, politicians and leaders grasped this concept of control and decided to make it into a religion in order to keep their people in line.
Do you think this might have been what happened?

I believe that religion was invented because when man first tried to understand his surroundings he did not have the knowledge or science to explain natural phenomena so invented all knowing all seeing larger than life gods to explain them. Those gods evolved over time to the single God most people worship now. Certainly your idea had a lot to do with the formation of gods and the evolution from many gods to one God and plays a large part in why people still believe in the fairy tale.

Do I agree that.....? No. But, I can understand why you might believe that. It can be like a fairytale and should be told to the young. It does help us stay in line and explain death to us all, not just a child. Yes, Politicians use it to control in one way or another.

But, I have felt the presence of God through the Spirit. I have seen the changing power of a life dedicated to his will and precepts. I have seen many people sacrifice all to achieve much. I have read of those who have died for this cause. I pray I will be ready to die for that cause, because it is easier than living for it, yet live for it I do.

Now in my personal life I have seen a great change. Others around me have also witnessed as well. Was I a huge evil, no not really. But, I was nasty enough and more than deserving of hell. I have reached out to those in need and have wished I could have done more. Only once did I think my life was in peril and nothing came of it. I have seen others in their poverty give me gifts I could never buy or return to them.

So, I am sorry, I do not agree......

No, because every Sunday I know the truth that there was actually a man named Jesus that is my savior, walked this world. And because it is not just children in my church but thousands of grown folks praising GOD. But what I do wonder is and I am being seroius when I ask this, What happens if you don't believe? I always wondered what those people looked like that would be left behind since there are so few I never really could imagine it.

I disagree to your answer. There's more meaning to religion than meets the eye. If this means that you don't believe in God, the evidence is right in your face. For example, do you know how our bodies were made in detailed, how the mind works differently than the animals, or how the stars and planets were arranged? I believe not all religions are true but only a few.

This is the way those who do not believe in God perceive religion. For face value it almost looks legit, however, it is a lie, a falsehood. All people everywhere are religious in some way, some more than others, all people have a belief system, all have a religious practicing lifestyle.

However those who believe in God Almighty the God revealed in the HOlY BIBLE these are not contrived fables but as it truly is: the Word of God. We of the household of believers have a "relationship with the One True God revealed fully in Christ Jesus".

Abby,

The idea that there is nothingness after we die is called nihilism. It is a relatively new concept.

I think you should read The Universe Next Door by James Sire. In that book, you will learn about the differing world views that are common in American (and European) society. http://www.amazon.com/Universe-Next-Door-Worldview-Catalog/dp/0830827803/sr=8-1/qid=1166757707/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-1990646-2892054?ie=UTF8&s=books

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:12-19
12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.

It all comes down to was Jesus raised from the dead? If He wasn't, then what He said about himself was just some delusion.

But if He was....

sure, i've had my doubts over the years... but certain things happen in life, or at least in my life that have proven to me that something else other than a fairytale exists. it's too complicated i think for humans to understand. its interesting to note that every culture has some sort of religion.

I actually was writing down my thoughts the other day and I wrote something very similar to this. I think religion was created so people could think that things were out of their control. They needed something to blame things for.

I'm not sure about religion but I do however believe in God which does not make me religious but it does make me spiritual. Christianity is not a religion...
