I'm sure she has probably known for awhile, especially from other schoolchildren who at 6 often find joy in yelling out the truth. I think she is probably afraid to tell the two of you, perhaps because you may not get her gifts. Or she is simply afraid of hurting your feelings and ruining the celebration. Don't threaten her with taking away presents if she doesn't believe. It's much the same as lying outright, and would lessen her trust in you.
She is definitely mature enough to know - talk to her. This will come as no big shock. Then tell her about the real magic of Christmas - the joy in seeing her face, the incredible love that comes of giving. Maybe you could even take her to a charitable place in your town to help feed the hungry, donate something, etc. Let her be creative.
It's not Santa that makes it Christmas past a certain age. The power of receiving is enormous at your daughter's age, so tell her that kindness, family, love, and wonder is what makes the holidays feel so special. Good luck!

Show her the three time Allen santa movies and Let her know that christmas can be great no matter what but, Santa knows if she has been naughty or nice. but doesn't always know what she wants for christmas...................
Or skip any explanation at all and do some chartiable things with the twelve year old. Maybe give some coats or go to a near by food bank an donate and feed some starving folks in your area. Get her mind off santa and make sure she doesn't act lite the brats from the chocolate factory movie............
Spirit of giving or the spirit of CARING. Might be a better idea to implant in this chlds head than to truly ponder over rather on not She is testing you.......
I have a co-worker whom is jewish and she doesn't belive anything that her family beilives she is suppose to. I aks her why she said they told her about the Easter Bunny, jesus, moses, Santa and the Tooth fairy all in the same type of setting so if she is to know that their is no easter Bunny then why should she have faith that their was/is Jesus. not to get religious on ya.
Keep the girl focased on doing good, rather than on testing you!!!!

My parents never told me that santa isn't real, and I would just play along with it anyways. In your case, I am guessing this is what they're doing unless they actually told you that they don't believe in santa anymore. If that's the case, then just ask them for a christmas list and that santa will bring them presents or what not. I mean, she is 12 years old so, that is pushing it like some people have said and that's about the time when I actually started playing along with the whole "santa" thing. :)

I agree with everyone. I think she doesn't believe anymore, and that's okay. You shouldn't expect her to. Just sit with her and have a little Santa chat. Let her know that you would like a list of ideas from her so that she is sure to get stuff that she likes. Everybody makes Christmas lists, even if they don't believe in Santa...they are very helpful to everyone!!

Are you REALLY worried that she doesn't believe in Santa? Come on. She is 12 years old. If she doesn't want to give you a wish list for gifts, don't make an issue out of it. Smile and get her a gift you think is suitable for her.

Yes, I believe she is testing, just tell her santa wont bring her presents if she doesnt give you the list. Most 12 year olds dont believe in santa.

She's been told by peers that there is no santa. In our family, If you do not Believe, you do not Receive. It's worked so far, and the oldest is almost 15, but will swear to her younger siblings/cousins that there is a Santa.

Most of the 12 yr. olds that I have known usually have figured out or know that Santa does not really exist. Maybe she's just tired of playing the game...

Yeah, she's testing. Probably known for a while and is enjoying watching you freak out. Get her a gift card to the local department store from Santa.
