They have historically been a scapegoat for many of the world's evils. One example is the many plagues that swept Europe - before trying to figure out the true epidemiological basis of the disease, they usually murdered or drove out Jews first.

Hate has no basis in fact, and is a learned thing. Some people learn it from their parents. Unfortunately some learn it from their houses of worship. Only the ignorant learn it from each other, or perpetuate it.
